July
2008 Summer Mission Trips
On July 5, 23 people will head to Machias, Maine, for our annual mission trip. Machias is located on the coast, as far north ("downeast") as you can go and still be in the USA. We will be joining 350 other intrepid travelers from all over, to make improvements in the lives of elderly, disabled and disadvantaged residents. We will return on July 12. We will not be the same individuals who left the week before. Yes, the names will be the same, and we may even look the same, but we will have been changed.

August
Vacation Bible School - August 4 -8
We are happy to announce that we will offer Gospel Light’s “Son World Adventure
Park . . . Your Choice for Fun in the Son!” the week of August 4 – 8 from 9AM to 12 noon. The adventure is open to all children entering Kindergarten through 6th grade. It is very important to register now and absolutely no later than June 29 so that all the preparation and ordering can be done. June 29th is the deadline and we need 25 children to be registered by that date.
The registration form that needs to be filled out is attached and can be down loaded for your convenience. There are three ways for you to register. You can mail or drop off the registration at the Church Office, place in the VBS Registration Box in the Church House or hand to Carol Skubik or Tina LoSardo. Extra registration forms are available on the back tables in the church and also next to the VBS Registration Box in the Church House.
Many of you graciously offered to help based on the results of the survey. Your names have been placed on the VBS Staff List in the Church House. Please check to see if your name is listed. We still need more adults and teens to help. Simply add your name to the list in your area of interest. If you have any questions, contact Carol Skubik by e-mail, carolskubik@embarqmail.com or by phone 908-359-3462. Thank you for all your help!
October
• Oct 25 & 26, Michael Franzese "Born Again Don"
The Vanity Fair Magazine once dubbed Michael Franzese the "Born Again Don." He will be at Harlingen Church on Saturday, October 25th at 7:00pm and on Sunday morning, October 26th at 10:00am.
Just a few years ago, Michael Franzese was one of the biggest money makers the mob had seen since Al Capone - and the youngest individual on Fortune magazine's survey of the "Fifty Biggest Mafia Bosses" - ranked eighteenth, just five behind John Gotti. His autobiography, Blood Covenant, tells his story from the early days in the mob and his rise to power until his Damascus Road experience that changes his life forever - and led him to do the unthinkable, the unexpected, and by some, the unbelievable - he quit the Mob and chose to follow Christ.
Michael's message is for young and old alike, especially high-risk teenagers. He reminds people that God can change anyone's life and set them free from any bondage! Invite your friends and neighbors to join us on October 25th & 26th!
Other News
Congregational Care - Email Prayer Chain
We will be starting an e-mail prayer chain in addition to our daytime/evening phone chain. Doing this by e-mail will involve more people and also provides a means of getting prayer requests out faster. If you are interested in this, please give your name and e-mail address to Janet or Kelle. There will also be sign up in the church house for the next few weeks.
Congregational Care - Casserole Program
We are starting a new program involving food. We feel there is a need for providing food to families during illnesses, surgery, etc. We would like to have casseroles donated and put in our freezer at church that would be readily available for those in need. We would also love homemade bread and cookies that could be frozen. Please label and put in disposable containers. There will be a sign up sheet in the church house or call Janet or Kelle to sign up.
New Consistory
Our Church Board, the Consistory, met on Thursday evening, February 15th. Mike Neer opened the meeting by sharing reflections from an Elder/Deacon Workshop that was held on February 3rd. He reminded all of us that we are called to be “Peace-makers” in the life of the Church.
Because this was the first meeting of a new Consistory, committee assignments were announced. Here’s a listing of them…
Executive Committee: Pastor De Young, Janet Gibson, & John Jakubowski.
Administration: Christopher Higgins.
Finance Committee: John Jakubowski.
Children’s Ministries: Tina LoSardo.
Youth Ministries: Susan Zdroik.
Adult Ministries: Jennifer Spencer.
Congregational Care: Janet Gibson.
Fellowship: Sara Davis.
Missions: Mike Neer.
Outreach: Robert Skubik.
Exterior Property: Fred Missel.
Interior Property: Eric Hendrickson.
Worship & Music: Rich Ward.
These committee chair-people will ask members of the congregation to serve on their committees this year. You may volunteer to serve on a committee or be asked to serve on a committee. People may serve on the same committee for four consecutive years. Committees are newly organized every year to insure that many people in the congregation are given opportunity to serve. It also helps to insure that there’s always a fresh infusion of new ideas. If you’re asked to serve on a committee, please say “Yes!”
2007 Mission Trips
I know it is hard to believe, but it is already time to think about next
summer. We had a fabulous time in SD on our trip this year, and it is time
to choose next year's destination for YOU!
We are offering three options for next summer. I know that some people
who went to Akron last summer on the Week of Hope (community service)
did not want to go this summer because we were going to do construction
work. And others didn't go to Akron because they wanted to do construction
work. So, summer 2007 we are offering both. Actually, we are offering
more than that. Read on! We are offering a WORKCAMP, a WEEK OF HOPE, and
a CHALLENGE WORKCAMP. Click
