Summer 2007 Youth Mission Trips
Summer 2007 Mission Trips
I know it is hard to believe, but it is already time to think about next
summer. We had a fabulous time in SD on our trip this year, and it is time
to choose next year's destination for YOU!
We are offering two options for next summer. I know that some people
who went to Akron last summer on the Week of Hope (community service)
did not want to go this summer because we were going to do construction
work. And others didn't go to Akron because they wanted to do construction
work. So, summer 2007 we are offering both. Actually, we are offering
more than that. Read on! We are offering a WORKCAMP and a WEEK OF HOPE
Here they are:
1) CountryRoads Challenge Workcamp, Montgomery,
WV
Senior High (ages 14+) -- July 1-7 (challenge workcamp-must have gone
to Standing Rock, or have building experience and approval of committee).
I have reserved 18 spaces.
A century ago, the southern mountains of West Virginia were home to a thriving
coal industry. In those days, mining companies constructed "Jenny
Lyn" coal camp housing for employees-cheaply built homes, often
without adequate heating, safe wiring or plumbing. (*I read that these
were built as temporary housing-not meant to be occupied in 2006. ) Most
of these homes are now owned by seniors, disabled people, and struggling,
single-parent families. Most are in need of repairs, insulation and painting.
This is an exciting adventure for your youth as you'll be entering into
various stages of full-home rehabilitation-working with local contractors
who may be completely restoring homes! You may be beginning a complete
overhaul of the interior of a home, or putting the final touches on other
houses that have been renovated. It'll be immensely rewarding work giving
back new life to once dilapidated homes. Nearby activities include:: Whitewater
rafting, hiking in national and state parks, Tamarack Arts and Cultural
Center and Exhibition Coal Mine.
100 campers max Lodging in semi-private rooms (college
dorm?)
2) The "Chosen Spot" Week of Hope Canandaigua,
NY
Must be going
into 8th grade (or older) July 8-13. I have reserved 13 spaces
Canandaigua is from an Iroquois word meaning "chosen spot," and
the beautiful green forest and soft rolling hills only enhance that meaning.
But despite its beauty, Canandaigua still has some needs that you can meet.
The local Veterans Hospital, hampered by budget cuts, depends heavily on
volunteer care. Volunteers will spend time with the men and women there,
playing games, reading, or just talking, as well as brightening up the facility,
repairing picnic tables, doing landscaping, and even painting a mural or
two. You are also greatly needed to help children with special needs participate
in summer programs. It's a great chance to help those who have served their
nation (the veterans) and those who cannot serve themselves (the children).
Canandaigua may be God's "chosen spot" for you this summer. Nearby
activities include Canandaigua Lake, with the Canandaigua Lady-a 150-passenger
paddle wheel steamboat- and four beaches; many historical sites; and a water
park.
99 campers max Stay in local school
You have probably noticed that there are three different weeks, too, so
no one can say that they can't go because you are away that week! All three
trips are driving trips (as opposed to this year), and should be much simpler.
We are also opening the Week of Hope to kids going into 8th grade.
Please call me (609-466-1882) to let me know which trip you would like
to go on. Space is limited, so you need to sign up early. I will need
$50 per person by the end of September in order to hold the spot. This
deposit is non-refundable. (If we find someone to take your place, we
will give you their $50 if you are unable to go).
Also, we will be having a Rummage Sale as a Mission Trip Fund Raiser
November 3rd and 4th. Start cleaning out closets and drawers to get
ready for this event!
