From July 2-8, 2006, 25 members of HRC will be going to McLaughlin, SD doing
repair work on homes owned by elderly members of the Standing Rock Sioux
Indian tribe.
"The Standing Rock Sioux Reservation lies amid the South Dakota
grasslands. In this remote region, jobs are scarce. Life is especially
hard in winter, when subzero temperatures and bitter winds tear at the
rotting exteriors, doors, and windows of the residents' homes. Here you
may help a proud, elderly Sioux man by fixing his front steps or repairing
the windows that let the bitter drafts in. And, when work is done, you'll
share his quiet joy in the expanse of a wild prairie that rolls down to
the Missouri River." (From the Group WorkCamp brochure).
The HRC youth group did a similar trip last summer, to Akron, Ohio, and
they had a wonderful time. Most of them grew closer to God on the trip,
and they all say it was the best week of their summer.
Due to the remote location of this work camp, it will not be an inexpensive
trip. Each person will be paying their own airfare, and the group is working
hard to raise the rest of money to take this service trip. We need to
raise at least $750 per person. We will add 3 days of sightseeing while
we are out there-Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills, the Badlands, and several
other National Parks and historic places. With travel to and from New
Jersey, it will be 12 days.
