Journey Through the Past
Harlingen Church and it's Parsonage will be participating in "Somerset County's Weekend Journey through the Past". It's a FREE Open House, held each year on the 2nd weekend of October. This year it will be Saturday, October 12, 10:00 - 5:00 & Sunday, October 13, 12:00 - 4:00.
The Reformed Dutch Church of Harlingen, better known today as the Harlingen Reformed Church, is a member of the oldest continuous Protestant denomination in the US, dating to 1628. It has one of the oldest continuing congregations in NJ starting in 1726. The building itself is the 4th structure, built in 1851. After two previous names, it was renamed for their beloved 4th pastor, Johannes Martinus Van Harlingen, as is the village of Harlingen, part of Belle Mead (Montgomery).
HRC music director, Anita Davidson, will be giving a mini-concert on Sunday, 10/13, 1:00 - 1:30, to showcase the over 900 pipe organ. During the weekend, the doors to the pipes will be open to take a peek. There will also be Colonial activities for children and adults can pick up a needle and try your hand at a quilting bee.
Come check out nearly 300 years of written history. There will also be Dutch "cakes" (cookies)!
The Harlingen Church Parsonage, the Pastor's house, will also be open for touring this year for the first time. The Parsonage was built in 1846. It is a 2-story frame building with an entrance in the Greek Revival mode. There is a beautiful center hall stairway with rooms on either side. In the summer of 2017, long time parishioner and master carpenter Jack Hunt and a dedicated volunteer crew lovingly renovated and refurbished the entire parsonage.
